Eco Printing
Using natural material to create images from nature
My work uses botanical materials - plant sourced paper, natural dyes, plants from my garden, the sun and water - all to persuade an image to emerge. While there is a method to follow, nature often introduces unexpected variables that bring surprise and delight.
Each piece is a unique imprint of nature.
The many steps to the process
The Eco Printing process involves a number of steps - preparing the substrate, in this case fabric, to accept the dye transfer; composing the plant material for a pleasing composition; covering with a dye blanket, bundling tightly to maintain contact; immersion in the prepared “hot pot” for 90 minutes or more; then unrolling to reveal the transfer.
Unrolling a bundle after immersion in the hot pot and (right) the finished piece on cotton with linen edging.
